I had been learning for about a year. I was yet to perform my first witch spells and had been prepping myself for the occasion.
Doing dishes, running errands, taking care of the horse and a whole raft of other really, I thought, ridiculous things. Gathering plants and finding out the difference between night shade and different kinds of cohosh.
It reminded me of Mr. Miagi in the Karate kid, wax on wax off. It was actually that silly.
What I did learn was plants and their use, what to use them in and when to harvest them. It was all a part of the learning curve. A pretty brutal one I might add. If you’ve ever read Carlos Castaneda’s works with Don Juan the Jacqui sorcerer you might understand.
My teacher at the time was a very harsh woman. Quite the task master and didn’t put up with much from me. Yet her counter part, a priest of some note was the gentlest bear of a man you’d ever meet. Patient and understanding taking the time to explain the reasoning behind a lot of what I was doing.
Between the two of them I got a great deal of knowledge during my five year stay. I saw things that most would tell you is not possible, yet I was there I saw it.
Like the night we were all sitting around the fire and talking about shape shifters, the good and the bad of it. My teacher asked a question then directed my gaze to the other side of the fire. When I turned back I was looking at a jet black panther sitting where she had only moments ago been. Bizarre, yes, and I sat there memorized not really sure what I should do only knowing that I wasn’t about to unlock my gaze from the panthers'. It stared right through me I swear.
I heard my name called and turned to where it was coming from behind me. It was M. calling and he was smiling saying it was alright and I had done well. I turned back to find her sitting in her spot, smiling at me and poking at the fire.
All of us then burst our in laughter and I breathed a sigh of relief.
He explained that it had been a test of sorts to see my reaction before they took me to the next step; I had passed with flying colors apparently.
